About This Book

About the book This book, divided into two volumes, contains much of the material required for the continued training of technicians and engineers, both those who are still students and those already inserted in the labor market, with regard to Statistics and its application in the control and improvement of processes, products and services. Topics covered include descriptive statistics, probability, random variables, probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis tests, variance analysis, regression and correlation, statistical models and simulation, statistical control, and design of experiments. Seeking to minimize mathematical formalism, the approach adopted goes towards reinforcing the understanding of the principles that support each of the techniques and the conditions required for its application. Chapter 1 presents some statistical techniques used in data analysis. It discusses what is statistics and its applications in process control. The different types of data and the measures of central trend and dispersion are presented. At this point we started the use of Minitab illustrating its use with the presentation of several features focused on Descriptive Statistics. And in each chapter this approach is maintained: presentation of concepts and statistical methods and then the facilities that Minitab provides to make use of the concepts and methods learned. The authors believe that this way the reader will understand why a particular problem is solved by the application of this or that specific method and will know how to efficiently perform the application of the theory. Chapter 2 presents the various definitions of probability and the concepts of random variable and probability distributions, discrete and continuous. The Binomial, Poisson and Normal distributions are analyzed in more detail. The issue of statistical models and process simulation using these models is discussed. Chapter 3 discusses some concepts of statistical inference, presenting estimation techniques and hypothesis tests for means and proportions. Chapter 4 continues the study of statistical inference, addressing variance analysis and regression analysis, and closes the first volume. In Chapter 5, already in the second volume, begins the presentation of quality tools and techniques that are based on the application of the statistical concepts discussed in the previous chapters. The fundamental ideas of Statistical Process Control (CEP) are addressed here and important concepts about variability are presented. The chapter ends with a discussion of control charts by attributes and variables. Chapter 6 demonstrates how variance analysis and regression analysis find important practical application in the Design of Experiments technique. A comprehensive approach begins with unifactorial projects and pursues topics such as multifactorial projects, two-level factorial experiments, fractional factorial experiments, and others. Occasionally, aspects of variance analysis and regression analysis, not covered in Chapter 4, are addressed here. About 50 examples are presented, showing in the set how to perform an experiment from start to finish. In general, the book contains a large number of solved examples distributed throughout the text. At the end of each chapter, several exercises are proposed. It is interesting that readers solve these exercises, individually or in groups. Some problems are marked with the symbol "diamond". This means that advanced concepts not discussed in the text and their solution requires a search on the part of the reader, who is encouraged to at least try to find a solution. At the end of each volume are presented the answers of most exercises and, in some cases, a detailed solution, which can even address topics not previously addressed. The authors thank Minitab, LLC (www.minitab.com) for their permission to play several Minitab screens® Statistical Software.
